about

There is no single instrument in this track. All the sounds are made out of 4 recordings of generators’ humming. When Russia began to commit energy terror in Ukraine, hitting critical infrastructure and leaving the population without electricity, generators became Ukrainians' new «power buddies». My initial idea was to record the buzzing and whirring of these devices and convey the new sonic reality of our lives in some experimental noisy drone ambient track. So, I went for a walk with my Zoom H4N and made 4 recordings of the generators that came my way. And then I started working on my composition and the process turned out like this: every day for several hours I would listen to these drilling sounds in my headphones, trying to make something music..ish out of them. And then, the lights would turn off due to scheduled black-outs, and in the dark, I would take off my headphones, and what do I hear? This humming again! The same sounds, coming from the outside from the real generators that would immediately start serving the nearest shops, medical offices, etc.! Honestly, I was already sick of hearing those «drrrr» all the time, so at that moment I realized that in my work, these annoying sounds should become as beautiful as possible, that I should transform this noise into music, and leave almost no hint for the listener that it's actually just a few samples of whirring sounds. After playing with the "simpler" and the "sampler" in Ableton, applying an endless number of delays, reverbs and other effects, I got an atmospheric downtempo piece with a distinctive beat. And one day, my friend and talented singer/musician Sheetel came to visit me, listened to a demo version of my track and came up with a brilliant idea:
"You definitely need a voice and a text here, something about those generators!"
So I just googled the word "generator" in Ukrainian and English, and noticed that almost every day, some news about generators appeared. So the narrative of the track was complemented by the headlines of these articles, which actually reflect one of the aspects of the current reality of Ukrainians.
