"Façade" emerged partly from my childhood fever dreams of getting lost in and falling through wallpaper by my bed, and partly from the post-apocalyptic experience of Donetsk Oblast I received on a recent journalistic trip.

I see "Façade" as an invalid, unreliable separator between the External and the Internal. While that distinction is habitual and has its significance in normal conditions, the Façade is easily penetrated not only by a projectile but by the attentive sight as well.
Façade is a porous, enormous and deep landscape, microscopic and macrocosmic and vice versa. How can something so see-through be a real barrier between the human being "inside" and the immense cosmos "outside"?

There are people staying in razed, deserted at first glance, cities and villages of the Ukrainian East. Some stay to rebuild, some to evacuate others, some to take care of those who won't. Some, though, stay because they are irrationally anchored to ruined, uninhabitable remnants of their lives, unwilling to accept the fact that the External walked through their walls like it was nothing. I’ve seen a man with a broom in a 9-storey building in Lyman that was hit by a missile and was literally falling down in real-time.

"I can't evacuate," he said, wiping the absence of the floor.
"I need to watch my things, someone might take them."

As the man sighed, the dying husk of an apartment building rustled as one. And everything around us was just like that, inch by inch, piece by piece, street by street, mile by mile, devoid of any significance, looking like one continuous surface, like the flowering skin of a carrion corpse of cosmic proportions.
