about

Can you believe it: in approximately seven years, every cell in the human body ceases to exist and is exchanged for a new one?
So that means every seven years or so, we have a completely new body and, technically, become a different person.
Don't know if it's true and forgot where I read it or heard it (most likely in one of the interviews with David Cronenberg).

The text I used for this composition was written eight years ago.
So this track is an attempt to make an inner dialogue with myself.
Or rather, with a different person that I was at that time.
The text itself is a review of "The Peripheral" by William Gibson.
Read it for the first time eight years ago, and the second reading was this December.
Which felt totally different this time.
Yet strangely familiar.

Now it may seem inappropriate, with too much purple prose, pathos, cringeworthy at best.
But this track is an attempt to accept and embrace this part of my former self, too.
So what is going in it apart from the words that are eight years old now?

The voice
Inspired by Caro C, I've decided to use my own voice as much as I can.
So it's everywhere – in ambient effects and pads, feedback source, bass (through resonator) and even snare drum (or at least something that substitutes it).
So making this composition felt often like a body process rather than conventional music making.
Kick drum, melodic sequences and hats are not my voice, but in a truly modular way, I've created them by pinging various sources in modular, which felt beautifully disorientating, as always.

And gestures
Inspired by Atau Tanaka here, most modulations were created in real-time by hand first and crafted into a fabric of the track later.
Yes, there were lots of mistakes, but they became hidden intentions afterwards.
And in hindsight, I'm amazed at how text influenced the structure of the composition.
There is always a temptation to record a quick instrumental jam, edit it quickly and call it a day (or track).
But where's the fun in that?
In order to set up a creative challenge for myself, I decided to overcome the habits of eight years ago and write a composition I was eager to do back then.
Though it is rather epic, I hope it won't be challenging for you to listen and enjoy.
